1. Atticus

This is one of the most used formatting software you can rely on. It is an easy to use amazing book formatting software.  It provides an excellent option to write your book in it as well. This means you can easily write and then format, instead of having to write in one software, and then format in another. Atticus is far more affordable than the leading alternatives and it is available on all conceivable platforms. It works as a formatting software and as a word processor. You will enjoy trying out this option.

2. Vellum

Vellum is an impressive tool which you can use to make creating professional looking books very easy. It is very easy to use and comes with no subscription fees. This software can be used to create both ebooks and books. It has a custom chapter theme builder. It has challenges among which are that it only worked on a Mac (so anyone with a PC cannot use it). Vellum is extremely expensive compared to other software. It is actually the most expensive of the options and only has 26 fonts to choose from. It doesn’t have footnotes, callout boxes and does not have formatting for H2-H. However it is still a good option if you have a Mac.

Kindle Create does well if you’re formatting for straightforward novels and essays. You can use it to format your manuscript. You can also use it to customize your headers and footers, create a table of contents, insert page numbers, give your eBook a visual theme and preview your eBook as it will appear on a tablet, phone, or e-reader. It is pretty easy to use. It is also free. It has a few challenges among which are you are very limited in what you can do and it is only suitable for some types of books. The finished product looks less professional. It has limited on export options. It does not have footnotes, callout boxes.

4. MS Word

MS Word is also a commonly used software for formatting books. This is an app most people are familiar with. It limits your formatting and you won’t be able to do as much as you would with something like Atticus or Vellum. It also has expensive annual cost if you don’t already have it and limited design options. It doesn’t have full bleed image or chapter themes with images. It has limited on export options and it is not actually intended for book formatting. So you may end up with a less professional-looking book.

5. Scrivener

Scrivener is another good software used for formatting books. It is great for planning and writing your book and inexpensive. It doesn’t have subscriptions fees but you do have to pay again each time they update. This software can create both ebooks and print books. The challenges are that it is difficult to use to format a book. It is more of a writing program with ‘formatting’ capabilities and that’s probably why it offers limited formatting options. It does not have footnotes, callout boxes. You can actually use this to format your book and it will still end up good.

6. Reedsy Book Editor

Reedsy Book Editor is another good option for authors to use and it is free. Once you log into Reedsy’s system, you can access this formatting software that is easy to use, but also incredibly limited in what you can do. It is easy to use and has pre-made templates. It can be used to create ebooks and printed books. It has some challenges among which are that it is highly limited in its capability to format and does not have footnotes, callout boxes. Also, It does not have formatting for H2-H6, has limited number of fonts to choose from an you may end up with a less professional-looking book.
